Collaboration Dynamics for Facilitators
Collaboration Dynamics is a collaboration-skills development process, designed to give groups of people the knowledge and skills to collaborate creatively, as well as sparking an iterative learning process.
It makes groups and teams greater than the sum of their parts. And unlike more common team development processes, it was designed remote first!
The process is based on Clean Language – a precision inquiry framework that improves communication between diverse individuals, even when exploring unknown unknowns in complex contexts.
This unique workshop is for a group of facilitators, trainers and other group leaders who want to experience these powerful approaches – and then to use them with their groups.
What Collaboration Dynamics delivers
Participants in Collaboration Dynamics courses learn how to establish a supportive group environment in which people are consistently working at their best, even in volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous situations.
Collaboration Dynamics supports group members to become more and more curious about each other’s diverse skills, interests and values. They become collaborative influencers, developing their proficiency in paying attention, guiding attention, and in speaking up clearly and honestly.
At the same time, they learn to be more proficient at communicating effectively, remotely. They grasp the true potential of video conference as a powerful communication medium, understand the challenges of the medium, and learn ways to exploit it to best advantage.
Collaboration Dynamics is different from other ways of introducing Clean Language to groups and teams because of its highly practical, real-world focus. There’s very little latency, as participants deliver workplace value from their very first session.
Collaboration Dynamics is suitable for use with a wide variety of groups and teams. The underpinning models have been valuable from classrooms to boardrooms, factory floors to council chambers.
The process may be used at any point in a team’s development, but is especially valuable at the ‘forming’ and ‘storming’ stages. It is not a conflict-resolution methodology, but is robust enough to handle high levels of disagreement.
Its underpinning principles make it especially appropriate where group members seek to, or are being asked to, take on greater autonomy and personal responsibility, as in Agile organisational transformations.
Collaboration Dynamics for Facilitators
These two linked half-day workshops operate at two levels. You’ll be experiencing the process as a participant AND considering how to use it with your own groups and teams.
We’ll cover six specific themes in collaborative communication:
- Getting clarity
- Being your best at work
- Feedback that delivers
- Overcoming obstacles
- Creative conflict
- Making decisions that stick.
In each of the six sections, you’ll learn a Clean-Language-based communication model, practice it in a small-group setting, and consider how to apply it in your own work context.
Who should attend?
This pair of linked workshops is specifically for facilitators, trainers and other group leaders who want to use Clean Language-based models with the groups and teams they support.
Some participants may undertake further study to become Rees McCann licensed trainers, delivering the full Collaboration Dynamics course to their clients, while others plan to blend the models with their existing facilitation tools in various ways.
(Experienced Clean facilitators report feeling unsinkable, or even antifragile: when events they are facilitating take an unexpected turn, they get better at what they do.)
Before joining this class, you should have at least a basic awareness of Clean Language principles and practices (for example, from prior reading). Some participants may have significantly more Clean experience: that’s welcome but not essential.

“This training will transform the way you work with others – highly engaging and delivered by superb facilitators.”
“Deep-diving training with multiple layers that invite for fantastic collaboration! Wonderfully done!”
Your trainer: Judy Rees
Judy Rees has been using Clean Language with groups and teams for more than 12 years, and has taught the topic extensively. She is the co-author of Clean Language: Revealing Metaphors And Opening Minds and author of Your Clean Language Questions Answered, as well as a number of recorded Clean Language courses.
In 2016 she founded the annual online gathering of the Clean community, Metaphorum, which connects 150 Clean enthusiasts around the world in an annual 13-hour live-learning unconference.
“A powerful set of models to apply in your everyday world and they bring extra power to you as a trainer, coach and overall people developer.”
“This has been one of the most impactful and energizing courses I have followed.”
Logistics and options
The two half-day sessions will be delivered via Zoom. There will be lots of small-group activities – you are expected to be heard and seen throughout. You will need a decent internet connection, a webcam and headset, and a quiet place to call from.
Clean ‘beginners’ will need to spend at least an hour on pre-course preparation. There will be ‘homework’ between the two sessions, but this can be blended in to day-to-day work and should not require more than a few minutes of allocated time.
Additional options:
- Six follow-up action learning sessions, around 90 minutes each. These can be led by the group, using supplied materials, or by a trainer
- One-on-one follow-up sessions with the trainer, to address any challenges in applying what has been learned
- Licensed Trainer status, for participants who want to teach the complete course, as is, using Rees McCann’s slides, trainer notes etc

The HOW-TO GUIDE
The talk-over-slides webinar is profoundly mismatched with the way humans learn and make decisions. This old-fashioned format is often grim for presenters, and even worse for participants. There are better ways to share information: ways that help people to learn, and make action more likely. Find recipes in this short ebook.
